Starting from Glansdorff and Prigogine's general evolution criterion for systems at local thermo dynamical equilibrium, we derive a necessary criterion for stability of viscous, electrically conducting fluids against perturbations of temperature. Kirchhoff's principle is retrieved as a particular case.
