This retrospective study examined clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in a large group of consecutive patients according to their smoking status at the time of the index intervention. We sought to confirm the conclusions of other investigators,(1-3) that smokers had a higher mortality than nonsmokers after PCI, and to discover the risk of adverse cardiac events in ex-smokers compared with a population that had never smoked.
