We investigated the resonant and off-resonant third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a novel phthalocyanine-related compound bromoboron trineopentyloxy-subphthalocyanine (BTN-SubPc)'s spin-coating films on quartz substrates via Z-scan technique with 38-ps pulses at 532 nm and 1.064 mum. The reverse saturation absorption at 532 nm and the two-photon absorption at 1.064 mum were observed. The chi((3)) values were measured to be 6.1 x 10(-12) esu at 1.064 mum and 6.7 x 10(-10) esu at 532 nm, which were much bigger than those of phthalocyanines. These results show that BTN-SubPc films have potential nonlinear optical applications. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
