We have investigated transport, magnetization and structure of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) Ultrathin films with thicknesses down to 1.6 nm. The insulator state appears below 3.5 and 2.3 nm for LCMO and LSMO, respectively. It originates from interface behavior and reduced dimensionality rather than from effects of epitaxial strain. Insulating LSMO films show bias-induced conductance. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
