Hollow fiber membrane solvent microextraction (HFMSME) has been applied as a simple and efficient means of sample preparation for the screening of drugs of abuse in saliva. Extraction of cocaine and its metabolites from a 2 ml saliva solution was achieved in 10 min. This was followed by fast GC separation allowing complete analysis to be achieved in 15 min. Using HFMSME, detection Limits ranged between 6 and 28 ng ml(-1) with average relative standard deviations of 9.0%. The effect of the presence of various foodstuffs was also investigated.
