We describe how the electromagnetic resonance and scattering properties of complex structures of which metallic wire structures are constituents can be studied with multiple scattering theory. The t matrix of individual structures is calculated with our recently developed rigorous equivalent circuit theory in which retardation effects are taken into account. We illustrate our method with the example of a planar periodic array of split ring resonators. The transmission is calculated as a function of frequency. The result is found to agree well with that obtained by a commercial code (COMSOL) but our result is two orders of magnitude faster and requires much less memory. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.
