Since PCBs are persistent toxic pollutants and do not degrade easily, the development of a safe and perfect methodology for destruction of such remains is of great importance. We have found that the catalyst activity of Pd/C toward the hydrodechlorination of PCBs was outstandingly activated by the addition of triethylamine. PCBs could be thoroughly dechlorinated under ambient temperature and pressure, and no product other than biphenyl has been detected by GC/MS. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
