The anode and cathode of lithium ion batteries are typically cast onto metal current collectors as a formulated coating containing the electrochemically active ingredients and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the binder [Proceedings of the Fourth International Batteries 2001 Symposium, Paris, France, April 2001]. Additionally, PVDF is used in the production of gel electrolytes for polymer Li ion batteries [Solid State Ionics 86 (1996) 49]. The development of polymers for such challenging applications should take into account the adhesion properties of the polymer, crystallinity, solvent effects, solution behavior and slurry preparation and processing. These properties directly affect the performance of the battery, as can be shown by electrochemical testing and cycling experiments. With the knowledge generated in our laboratories, new resins have been specifically designed to offer improved performance. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
