The combination of triethylamine, magnesium(II) perchlorate and bipyridine generates a catalyst system for the efficient combination of ethyl isothiocyanatoacetate and a range of aromatic aldehydes. The products of these reactions are synthetically valuable protected beta-hydroxy alpha-amino acids.
