The surface electronic structure of the Si(111)(3x1)/(6x1)-Ag surface has been investigated by the means of angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission using synchrotron radiation. A vicinal sample was used in order to obtain mainly a single-domain surface. At least two dispersive surface-related states were identified in both directions. The upper band has a clear dispersion of 0.25 eV, consistent with a (3x1) periodicity in (Gamma) over bar-(M) over bar direction. The experimentally obtained band maps were compared to the theoretical band-structure calculations for the so-called honeycomb chain-channel model for the metal-induced (3x1) reconstruction, and were seen to be in good agreement.
