The stable ferronematics (FNs) and ferrosmectics (FSs) were prepared in two types of liquid crystals-8CB and 7CP5BOC-by doping them with fine magnetic particles 11 nm in diameter. The structural instabilities of prepared FNs and FSs in magnetic field were indicated by means of dielectric and conductivity measurements. All obtained results were in qualitative agreement with the Burylov-Raikher's theory. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
