In the United States, undernutrition occurs in 5% to 12% of community-dwelling older persons, in 30% to 61% of hospitalized older persons, and in 40% to 85% of persons in long-term care institutions. Undermitrition is associated with poor clinical outcome, including a risk for increased mortality.
