When milled together with calcite or fluorite, malononitrile and methyl cyanoacetate readily underwent Knovenagel condensation with aromatic aldehydes. giving the corresponding arylidenemalononitriles and (E)-alpha-cyanocinnamic esters in good to excellent yield.
