Elastic inclusions in plastically deforming metals provide a useful test of the ability of gradient plasticity models to predict length scale effects in deformation microstructures. Simple finite element analysis shows, however, that further development of such models is required if the effects observed in practice are to be predicted. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc.
