An investigation on the Ln (Ln = La, Pr, Nd and Gd) 3d X-ray photoelectron spectra in LaGaO3, SrLaAlO4, SrPrAlO4, NdGaO3, CaNdAlO4 and GdCa4O(BO3)(3) is reported. Complex satellite structure of the spectra due to the electron transferred to the 4f level from a lower energy valence orbital of the anion is considered. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
