The functions of the basal transcription factors involved in RNA polymerase 11 dependent transcription have been the focus of many years of biochemical analysis. Recent advances have shed some light on the structure of these factors, how conformational changes and intramolecular interactions regulate activity, and have revealed an expanded role for TFIIH in nuclear transcription.
