Complex la, containing two labile phosphine ligands, is a versatile precursor to the important class of olefin metathesis catalysts containing an activating NHC ligand and a labile phosphine donor. The lability of the remaining PPh3 ligand can also permit disubstitution by IMes; this side reaction is easily prevented by precise stoichiometric control.
