The hydrothermal reaction of ZnCl2, V2O5, 1,3-diaminopropane in water at 155 degreesC for 120 h produces [(NH3(CH2)(3)NH)Zn](2)(3+) [V4O13](6-), I. The connectivity between ZnO3N and VO4 tetrahedral units gives rise to a unique layered architecture. with the amine molecule directly bonded to the Zn center pointing in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the layers. The presence of V4O13 linear chains in I is noteworthy. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
