We apply the classical Monte Carlo method to investigate the magnetization plateaus of one-dimensional spin-S (S greater than or equal to 1) antiferromagnetic Ising chain with a single-ion anisotropy under external magnetic field at low temperatures, which shows 2S + 1 magnetization plateaus under external magnetic field in the ground state. We studied the cases of S = 1 and (3)/(2) which confirmed our above conclusion. Some important predictions about one-dimensional antiferromagnetic XXZ chain can be made from the properties of such Ising chain of big spin. We also discuss some other interesting physical quantities such as the specific heat and Neel order at low temperatures. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
