Inflammation plays a key and persistent role throughout all the phases of wound healing. Inflammatory mediators are the soluble factors that stimulate inflammation and control wound healing. This article defines the critical inflammatory mediators, provides a clear and concise organizational structure of the numerous factors, and explains their role in healing. Dysregulation of inflammatory mediators produces poor healing, but supplemental administration of certain factors can be used as therapy to enhance wound healing.
