The chemistry of polyurethanes, polyureas, polyurethane dispersions and their reaction partners such as oxazolidines continues to grow judging by the number of patent applications and papers published. The application areas of these products also continues to increase. This paper presents a review of past and current technology including examples of the synthesis of the above species. Hybridisation of these systems is in vogue and this trend will continue. Some chemical synthesis pathways are suggested for the modification of the above-mentioned species to enhance properties. A few predictions are made as to what the future might hold. Fast and slow reacting systems are discussed along with their uses in coating structural steelwork, floors and other substrates.
