Preeclampsia is a common pregnancy-related disease that can create significant perinatal morbidity. The etiology of preeclampsia is unknown. Presently, no single diagnostic test reliably predicts those who will be affected. This article describes and discusses the definition, epidemiology, proposed etiologies, and attempted preventative strategies of preeclampsia, and discusses the basis for, and status of, investigations into early screening.
