The rate constant for the reaction H-. + H2O2 --> (OH)-O-. + H2O was newly determined to be 3.5 x 10(7) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) by observing the Cl-2(.-) absorbance in pulse radiolysis experiments involving very pure acidic aqueous solutions of chloride ions and hydrogen peroxide. A reaction mechanism for the generation of Cl-2(.-) is described. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
