Up to date synthesis and properties of various types of fluorine-containing polymers have been reviewed. Homopolymers, which were fluorinated in main chain, terminal, and side chain, and perfluorinated ionomers, where a perfluoro pendant side chain was terminated by an ionic group, were synthesized and characterized. Polymer blocks with fluorinated side chain were combined with nonfluorinated blocks to prepare diblock and multiblock copolymers. Fluorinated cross-link was synthesized from perfluoroalkyl polymer by using the cross linking agent or from fluoro polymer by radiation modification. Fluorine-containing polymers aggregate in solutions by the solvophobic interaction of fluorinated moieties and form thin films with the segmented fluorine distribution. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
