We consider the problem of a molecular hydrogen ion in the presence of a short intense laser field, simplifying the treatment to one dimension with two degrees of freedom, one for the nuclear separation and one for the electronic motion along the internuclear axis, with the electric field also along this axis. Special attention is paid to the extraction of physical information from the time-propagated wavefunction. Computer animations further illustrate the dynamics of the process.
