Optical properties of polyallyl diglycol carbonate (PADC) polymer films of thickness 250 pm irradiated with 100 MeV Ni7+ ions of fluence range of 10(10)-10(12) cm(-2) were studied. Information about the optical properties were obtained with ultraviolet-visible (UV - Vis) spectroscopy and FTIR analysis. The optical band gap (E,), calculated from the absorption edge of the UV spectra of these polymers in 200-500 nm region varied from 2.22 to 1.47 eV for pristine and various irradiated samples, respectively. The optical band gap is correlated to the number of carbon atoms (N) in a Cluster with the modified Tauc equation. FTIR spectra indicates that on irradiation there is change in the intensity of the absorption bands relative to the pristine sample without appearance of any new absorption bands. Change in optical gap indicates a gradual phase transition of the polymer. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
