Improvements in medical care have led to an increase in the number of patients requiring prolonged airway support. Little prospective data have been collected regarding the long-term complications of these artificial airways, however. This article gives a brief overview regarding the possible long-term sequelae of endotracheal intubation and tracheostomy.
