Incisional hernias are a common problem, with over 100,000 repairs performed each year in the United States. This article discusses predisposing risk factors for development of an incisional hernia, including patient-related factors and iatrogenic factors that could be surgeon-related. The types of repairs and the prosthetic materials available to surgeons are evaluated with regard to recurrence rates and potential complications after repair. Special considerations such as parastomal hernias, the giant incisional hernia, and the patient with intractable ascites are also discussed.
