The Hilbert Huang Transform method is applied to identify different components of the spectra of real sea waves. Field data collected at the Portuguese coast are used in this study. The ability of Empirical Mode Decomposition to extract the different oscillation modes, embedded in the sea surface elevation records, is demonstrated. The contribution of different Intrinsic Mode Functions to the wave data is examined. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
