The luminescence properties of Ce3+ ions in calcium halophosphates Ca-5(PO4)(3)X (X = F, Cl) has been studied. The excitation bands of Ca5-2xCexNax(PO4)(3)Cl are shifted to lower energies comparing with Ca5-2xCexNax(PO4)(3)F. Codoping with Na+ ions results in a remarkably increase of the luminescence intensity of Ce3+-doped Ca-5(PO4)(3)X apatites due to the charge compensation. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
