Microporous titanium silicate [ETS-10(,) (Na,K)(2)TiSi5O13]and transition metal ions incorporated titanium silicates were investigated for the photocatalytic decomposition of acetaldehyde. ETS-10 with a photoexcitable linear chain of titanium and oxygen decomposed acetaldehyde under UV radiation and the rate constant for the decrease of acetaldehyde (0.010 m(-1)) is comparable to that of pure TiO2 (0.013 m(-1)). Interesting visible (lambda > 420 nm) and UV light activity was found for ETS-10 samples incorporated with Cr and Co [ETS-10 with Cr(or)Co/Ti = 0.05] and for materials synthesized by ion-exchange reactions such as Co-ETS-10 and Ag-ETS-10. All other ion-exchanged (Na,K)(2-x)M'xTiSi5O13 (M' = Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II)) samples were found to be active photocatalysts that can decompose acetaldehyde under UV radiation. Materials synthesized were characterized by a variety of techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, BET surface area and UV-VIS diffuse reflectance measurements. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc.
