Three different polyester resins have been synthesized from a purified vegetable oil. The oil has been collected from Nahar seeds (Mesua ferrea), available in India. The various physical properties of the oil viz. iodine value, acid value, saponification value, specific gravity, moisture content, etc. have been determined. The drying test and IR spectroscopic analysis of the oil have also been performed. The monoglycerides have been obtained from the oil by alcoholysis method. Subsequently resins are formed by the reaction of monoglyceride with phthalic and/or maleic anhydride. The synthesized resins have been characterized by IR spectroscopic analysis, and by measurement of physico-chemical properties like acid value, iodine value, drying time, volatile matter content and viscosity. The pencil hardness and chemical resistance behavior of the cured resins were also studied. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
