A combined finite-discrete element model for failure and collapse of structural systems comprising of reinforced concrete beam or column type structural members has been developed and implemented into a combined finite-discrete element code. The results obtained using the proposed model compare well with analytical and experimental results. In addition the rotational capacities obtained are in good agreement with published experimental results. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
