Methacrylates are obtained by using a one pot method, in which the alpha-methyl substituted acrylic acid is converted into the corresponding anhydride in situ by means of carbodiimides or p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and a further reaction with 2,6-dialkylphenols in the presence of 4(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) as the catalyst.
