New main-chain-type polymers of 8-quinolinol were prepared by organometallic polycondensation. They had a poly(aryleneethynylene)-type structure and exhibited photoluminescence with a peak at about 470 nm and quantum yields of 21-39%. Metal ion such as Zn2+ and Al3+ modified the photoluminescence.
