A UVA and a UVB filter (4-tert-butyl-4'-methoxydibenzoyl methane and 3-(4-methylbenzylidene) camphor) insoluble in water have been complexed with various cyclodextrins and beta-cyclodextrin derivatives. The molar ratio of the included UV filter to cyclodextrin in the solid complexes have been calculated from thermal analysis data. Among the cyclodextrins studied randomly methylated beta-cyclodextrin was found to be the best solubilizer of both UV filters. The photostability of a model sulfonamide drug in aqueous solution has been improved in the presence of a UVA filter solubilised by RAMEB.
