Cellular processes and pathways are typically delineated in arrow diagrams to depict the relationship between the individual genes or proteins. These simplifications neglect the complexity and non-linearity of cellular regulatory networks. In this review, a three-dimensional (3D) visualisation model is presented that can be helpful in understanding the non-linear behaviour and limited predictability of regulatory networks, as well as their organisation, stability, attractor states, and evolution. A better understanding of the current views of large, complex scale-free networks can assist in planning and interpretation of high throughput microarray experiments. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
