The sol-gel method was used to prepare SrFe12O19 powders. A solution of water, ethanol, citric acid, ethylene glycol and iron and strontium ions, was polymerized at room temperature by the solvent elimination. The precursor formed was calcined at temperatures from 500 to 900 C in air to obtain the SrFe12O19 phase. The effects of the calcination temperature on the phase composition and the magnetic properties of the products have been investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of strontium ferrite particles at temperature of 700 C. The maximum coercivity and the saturation magnetization of the strontium ferrite powders were determined by vibrational sample magnetometer (VSM). (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
