Two families of multielement detectors can be considered for principal military and civilian infrared (IR) applications; one used for scanning systems and the other used for staring systems. In the common understanding, third generation IR systems provide enhanced capabilities such as a larger number of pixels, higher frame rates, better thermal resolution as well as multicolour functionality and other on-chip functions. In the paper. issues associated with the development and exploitation of third generation HgCdTe detectors are discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
