A defect-free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display, which has potential for electronic paper and liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) applications, has been developed using an alignment layer of 5degrees obliquely evaporated SiOx. In this paper, optimized conditions for achieving a defect free device are presented.
