We produce an optical vortex using a computer generated hologram (CGH) and show different methods to invert the charge of the vortex experimentally as well as theoretically. Using these methods we implement an all optical controlled NOT (CNOT) gate. This can lead to a new approach for quantum computation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
