Microstructure and phase stability of the High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) sprayed Tribaloy(C)-400 (T-400) coating were studied. It was found that the as-sprayed coating exhibits a coexistence of amorphous and nanocrystalline phases due to the very high cooling rate. First principle calculation is used to compare the energetic stability of the nanocrystalline phases. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
