In this study, four AZ91D magnesium plates with different Zn content were treated with chemical conversion treatments. The chemical conversion coating was examined using scanning electron microscope, optical microscope and glow discharge optical emission spectrometer. The testing results indicated that increase in Zn content produced a thicker chemical conversion coating. However, when the Zn content exceeded 2 wt.%, the thickness of the chemical conversion coating decreased. To investigate the chemical conversion mechanism, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the magnesium substrate in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution.
