Cast A356 alloys prepared by friction stir processing (FSP) were subjected to fatigue investigation. FSP resulted in a significant improvement in fatigue life of A356. Fatigue life improvement was attributed to significant grain refinement, homogenization of the microstructure, and the elimination of porosity. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc.
