(PCy3)(2)Cl2Ru=CHPh-catalyzed Kharasch additions of trihaloalkanes across olefins provide polyhalogenated adducts, which upon hydrolysis furnish alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, aldehydes, or gamma-hydroxybutenolides.
