Cultural diversity and intellectual disability

Purpose of review This paper reviews cultural diversity and intellectual disability, focusing on research papers published from January 2001 to March 2004. The lack of a review, in the past 3 years, focusing on ethnicity, cultural diversity and intellectual disability prompted the decision for a 3-year review period. Recent findings Recent research with people with intellectual disabilities has focused on inclusion and participation in society and the need for value-based services. How does this compare with the nature and experiences of people with intellectual disabilities and their families from black and minority ethnic communities living in our modern multicultural societies in the Western world? Research shows a high prevalence of intellectual disabilities in some minority ethnic communities, experience of stigma and isolation, racism and the creation of social barriers, and a lack of cultural sensitivity in service delivery and the negative attitudes of professionals. Current research also highlights some of the implications of religious, and other cultural, beliefs of families from black and minority ethnic communities, and calls for more inclusive and culturally sensitive services. Summary Research on cultural diversity and intellectual disability must explore the involvement and participation of people from black and minority ethnic communities, with a view to building acceptable models of culturally sensitive services.
