An analytical expression for the nonlinear refractive index of graphene has been derived and used to obtain the performance metrics of third order nonlinear devices using graphene as a nonlinear medium. None of the metrics is found to be superior to the existing nonlinear optical materials. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
