The structural and bulk magnetic properties of the spinel system ZnxMg1.5-xMn0.5FeO4 with x = 0.0-0.6 have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, magnetization and AC susceptibility measurements. The distribution of the cations has been deduced through XRD intensity analysis and the non-linear variation of lattice constant with Zn-content has been explained on the basis of distribution of the cations. The three sublattice models analysis of the system based on the uniform and localized spin canting approach have been used to explain the variation of magnetization with Zn-concentration. The Neel temperature obtained from thermal variation AC susceptibility measurements decreases with Zn-content (x). (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
