The N, N-dimethylbenzyl ammonium maleate salt ( 1) undergoes chiral crystallization while its oxalate counterpart ( 2) yields to a centrosymmetric crystal. The difference is related to the motif formation in the chiral vs. the centrosymmetric crystal. The X-ray treatment is complemented by a CSD data bank search of the C-H...O geometry of -CH2-N moieties.
