Nine dinuclear copper(II) complexes with hxta(5-) ligands {H(5)hxta = N,N'-(2-hydroxy-1,3-xylylene)-bis-(Ncarboxymethylglycine)}: [Cu-2(MeO-hxtaH)(H2O)(2).4H(2)O (1), [Na(mu-H2O)(2)(H2O)(6)][Cu-2(Cl-hxta)(H2O)(3)](2).6H(2)O (2), [Cu(H2O)(6)][Cu-2(Me-hxta)(H2O)(2)](NO3)-2H(2)O (3), [Cu-2(R-hxtaH)(H2O)(3)].3H(2)O {R = Cl (4), CH3 (5), and MeO (6)}, [CU2(MeO-hxtaH(2))(U-X)(CH3OH)].3CH(3)OH {X = Cl (7), Br (8)} and K5Na(mu-H2O)(10)[Cu-2(mu-CO3)(Me-hxta)](2).4H(2)O (9), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. In complexes 4-7, the dinuclear units are linked via novel pairwise supramolecular interactions involving the ligand carboxylate groups. The intra- and intermolecular magnetic interactions have been quantified, and the coupling constants have been related to the structural geometries.
